Typodarium 2010

Wednesday, 18 November, 2009

The Typodarium folks sent me a free copy of their 2010 calendar (incredibly nice of them! I would’ve bought one), complete with Banyan as the face of May 8. Woot!

Epistolar Font

Tuesday, 8 September, 2009

I liked Epistolar so much that I contributed some new glyphs and tweaks. Masklin8 was kind enough to use these tweaks and re-release the font over on Deviant Art. Go check it out and download it (for free)!

10 Great Free Fonts You Might Have Missed

Monday, 11 August, 2008

Johno over at ILoveTypography.com got me thinking about my favorite fonts. I have a list of go-to fonts, but it’s not terribly interesting. On that list, however are a couple of free fonts that I love, so I decided to come up with 10 interesting free fonts that I don’t see people use that much.

Lindau

Comes in a great variety of weights: light, regular, medium, bold, extra bold, and black. The version I’ve been using needs kerning (I took it on myself to kern the font for my own use, I like it so much), but it’s an otherwise excellent family.

Zalamander Caps

Zalamander is a full-featured font family, and the folks at Just Another Foundry are giving away the all-caps version. Beautifully balanced, bold, and striking.

IM Fell

A beautiful set of revival fonts, complete with ligatures, swash characters, and ornaments. As the author says, these fonts are “nearly free,” with a clause in the license that you have to attribute their use in your publications.

Blue Plate Special

A great, stylized slab serif. You can get a free version of this font over at MyFonts.com. The Pro version is $7.

Clementine Sketch

You may know DeviantArt.com as a haven for anime and off-beat photography, but there are also a slew of free fonts there, and some of them are really great. (The remainder of the fonts on my list are all from DA.) Take Clementine Sketch, for instance. A lovely hand-drawn font that connects its glyphs ingeniously.

Reaktor

A great, futuristic sans-serif that makes for beautiful headlines.

Citrus

Quirky, hand-crafted, and impactful.

Drinking About You

Tall, skinny, high-contrast, and slick.

Often

A lovely sans-serif that’s in beta right now. Eventually, this will be a commercial font, so grab the beta version and play around with it while you can.

Bola

Another nice, quirky display face. Great contrast; excellent geometry.

Apollo Is Good

Thursday, 27 March, 2008

I’m re-reading Chip Kidd’s The Cheese Monkeys, in anticipation of reading his new novel The Learners (sequel to Cheese Monkeys), and I notice that he set the book in Apollo, which I had seen before and filed away in my mind as nice but nothing special. Well, I was wrong. It’s a lovely font, and looks really great as a body text. It’s also quite reasonably priced.
